Major MCP Rewrite Goes Fully Stateless with Hardened OAuth
DigitalColmer · x · 2026-07-30
The Model Context Protocol (MCP) has undergone its biggest rewrite since launch.
Key updates include:
- Fully Stateless: Eliminating sticky sessions and long-lived SSE streams in favor of ordinary HTTP requests that scale easily.
- Security & Routing: Introducing hardened OAuth alignment, proper headers for routing and caching, and multi-round trip requests.
- Extensibility: Adding a governed extensions system.
Additionally, Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Gateway has already integrated the update, allowing developers to enable the new protocol with a single UpdateGateway API call while maintaining backward compatibility.
