Reverse-Engineering Google Web Guide: Uncovering the Hidden AI Search Retrieval Funnel

As Google introduces AI Overviews (AIO), AI Mode (AIM), and the experimental Web Guide (WG), how AI search retrieves, selects, and cites sources has become a black box. Web Guide is currently the only Google surface that prints the number of documents it reads and keeps.
To uncover the underlying mechanics of AI search, a new Chrome extension called AIO/AIM/WG Inspector has been released. The tool compares source discrepancies between organic search results and AI-generated answers locally, rebuilding the full retrieval funnel specifically for Web Guide.
