DeepMind Disbands AlphaFold Team; Nobel Laureate John Jumper Joins Anthropic

According to the Financial Times, Google DeepMind has disbanded the original AlphaFold team, redistributing members across projects like Gemini, AI coding, nuclear fusion, and Alphabet's Isomorphic Labs. Most notably, AlphaFold2 lead and Nobel Laureate John Jumper has left to join Anthropic, along with two other core researchers.
Google officially responded that they are expanding scientific research rather than shrinking it, aiming to build a Gemini-powered scientific platform. However, there are concerns that spreading talent across diverse projects might make it difficult to replicate the focused, long-term miracle achieved by the original AlphaFold team.
