The Last Moat: What Happens When AI Intelligence Is Commoditized?
markjeffrey · x · 2026-07-30
Set against a fictionalized 2028 backdrop, this essay explores how the massive data center moats built by tech giants will collapse once AI intelligence becomes fully commoditized.
The author argues that the combination of open-weight models and distributed compute (leveraging university clusters, render farms, and idle hospital GPUs) will drastically reduce the cost of training frontier models. As closed-lab breakthroughs are quickly replicated by the open-source community through distillation, the business model of relying purely on 'compute fences' will become unsustainable. When intelligence is no longer scarce, the true barriers will shift to other coordination technologies and mechanisms.
