US Mulls Foreign Robot Import Ban; Founders Critique Closed Chinese Hardware

Commenting on a potential U.S. ban on importing all "advanced robotics" from foreign countries, AI founder Suhail shared insights from his recent work in the robotics sector.
He pointed out that the Chinese hardware ecosystem is extremely closed and proprietary. Using Unitree as an example, he noted that vendors rarely provide firmware source code for actuators or other critical internals. Under the current deployment regime, ensuring the safety of these robots in the U.S. is highly challenging.
However, he mentioned he would be totally fine with their entry if the hardware were fully open-sourced for heavy inspection and safety validation. He also felt that banning actuators specifically might be unnecessary, as U.S. startups in this specific hardware space are just getting underway.
