Runtime Scaling Triggers Red Queen Race Across the Economy
QuintinPope5 · x · 2026-07-30
The author points out an under-considered aspect of AI spending: the positive returns to runtime scaling might force huge swaths of the economy into a "Red Queen race" against each other (having to run constantly just to stay in place).
Cited investor views suggest this is exactly what makes investors anxious right now:
- There is no obvious path back to sustained, positive free cash flow (FCF) generation
- Yet tapping out of the race would result in even worse consequences
This implies the industry may be forced to sustain high inference compute costs over very long periods just to remain competitive.
