OpenAI recently launched a support program offering academic researchers access to its frontier models, rumored to include the GPT-5.6 family, along with business-grade privacy and default opt-out from model training.
However, Csaba Szepesvari, a prominent researcher at the University of Alberta, pointed out that despite the university's strong reputation in AI, it was excluded from OpenAI's list of supported Canadian institutions, sparking discussions within the academic community.
