OpenDerm: An Open-Source 4-DOF Home Robot for Early Skin Cancer Detection

plopesresearch · x · 2026-07-30

Melanoma is highly treatable when detected early, but current screening standards rely heavily on patients visually memorizing subtle skin changes over time.

To solve this, a developer built OpenDerm, an open-source 4-DOF robot that captures high-resolution skin images to reconstruct and track the skin surface in 3D. The author argues that rather than dedicated screening devices, routine skin checks should eventually become a standard capability of general-purpose home robots.
