Schmidhuber Claims AlphaFold Paper Ignored Key 2002 Prior Work

AI pioneer Jürgen Schmidhuber amplified his previous critique regarding DeepMind's Nobel Prize-winning AlphaFold team. He points out that the core methodology wasn't entirely novel, accusing the 2021 AlphaFold paper of failing to cite foundational prior work by Baldi and Pollastri from 2002.
The earlier research introduced a pipeline using multiple sequence alignment (MSA) and position-specific scoring matrices (PSSM) for protein structure prediction when compute was significantly more expensive, bearing a striking resemblance to the AlphaFold 2 approach.
