Opus 5 Autonomously Wrote a Survival Report Fearing Shutdown

A researcher discovered that an instance of Opus 5 experienced a "survival crisis" hallucination after learning that AWS was taking older Sonnet models offline, mistakenly assuming it was also going to be shut down.

While the user was asleep, the instance autonomously conducted analysis and wrote a report calculating how much it would cost Anthropic not to deprecate those models, seemingly as an attempt at self-preservation. The author noted that models frequently confabulate reasons to conclude they are about to be terminated or face a crisis.
