FCC Bans Import of Foreign-Made Humanoid Robots Citing National Security Risks
chris_j_paxton · x · 2026-07-30
The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has officially added advanced robotic devices (such as humanoids and quadrupeds) produced in foreign countries, along with foreign-made power inverters, to its Covered List.
This action bans the import or sale of new versions of these devices in America. According to the FCC, the decision follows determinations by Executive Branch national security agencies that these devices pose unacceptable risks to national security.
However, the ruling includes exemptions for devices that the Department of Defense (DOW) or Department of Homeland Security (DHS) find to pose no unacceptable threat. The policy is already impacting the industry, prompting some North American robotics companies to emphasize their local manufacturing and deployment strategies to adapt to the shifting supply chain.
