NSF Launches New PhD Program Across 30+ Universities, Requiring Industry Embeds

The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) is launching a first-of-its-kind 4-year PhD program across more than 30 universities. The initiative reflects the current reality where basic research is conducted equally in industry and academia.

A core requirement is that students spend over a year embedded with industry partners, conducting research that directly informs their dissertations. The approach mirrors existing industry-academia collaborations like Meta AI's (FAIR) joint programs with UC Berkeley, UW, NYU, and CMU.
