AI-written books are now crowding Amazon genre fiction
A new paper on AI and copyright uses full-text AI detection from Pangram to study self-published genre-fiction books sold on Amazon from 2023 through March 2026.
The key finding: Amazon is now flooded with books containing substantial AI-generated text, and those books are making money while also crowding out sales of non-AI books.
The authors argue that market impact does not require a book to be high quality. If thousands of such books exist, generative AI can change the market simply through volume.
The paper is co-authored with researchers from University of Michigan, Stony Brook, and Columbia.
