Arvind Narayanan says AI may reshape work, but not via a single sudden job-killing milestone

In his ICML 2026 keynote, Narayanan argues that AI as Normal Technology remains the right framework for thinking about AI’s effects unless a real discontinuity such as recursive self-improvement arrives. He also says there is no single lab milestone that will suddenly make everyone out of work.

His broader point is that future jobs will look very different and require adaptation. He ends with a vision of human/AI co-superintelligence, while noting that his team at Princeton is focused on evaluating agents in ways that go beyond raw benchmark gains.
