New paper says AI-written books are flooding Amazon and crowding out sales

A new paper finds that AI-written self-published genre books are not just low-quality slop — they are materially affecting Amazon’s book market.

Using full-text AI detection from Pangram, the authors studied self-published genre fiction sold on Amazon from 2023 to March 2026. They report that the platform is flooded with books containing substantial AI-generated text, that these books are earning significant revenue, and that they are crowding out sales of non-AI books.

The paper’s broader point is that a book does not need to be good to change the market: once thousands of AI-assisted titles can be produced, the aggregate presence alone can reshape demand.
