DoorDash is building its own drone delivery business
DoorDash has launched DoorDash Air, a drone delivery business built by its robotics and autonomy team. The company says it now has a Part 135 air carrier certification from the FAA, which legally allows it to operate a commercial drone delivery service in the U.S.
- DoorDash says it is building its own aircraft rather than only partnering with third parties.
- The rollout is not immediate: it has not given a detailed timetable and expects limited pilot programs first.
- Any longer-range autonomous flights would still require FAA approval for beyond-visual-line-of-sight operations, something Amazon, Wing, and Zipline have already pursued.
