Instagram’s Adam Mosseri says hiring now values judgment over coding depth

Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram and Threads, says the hiring bar has shifted: engineering value is no longer measured mainly by time spent writing code, but by judgment.

In a conversation with Lenny Rachitsky, he said his team no longer requires a full technical hiring loop, not because standards got lower, but because the criteria moved. Mosseri framed the change as a world where knowing what a tool is good for, and what it isn’t, matters more than raw coding output.

The post argues that this shift is easy to miss until it shows up in hiring or performance reviews, and that judgment is becoming a skill in its own right — one that can be built and monetized separately from technical depth.
