RSIBench-Data tests whether agents can act like researchers and improve models
kimmonismus · x · 2026-07-29
The post shares RSIBench-Data, a new benchmark for testing whether LLM agents can do data-centric research the way human researchers do.
The benchmark isolates the research loop from optimization and systems work so the agent is judged on research decisions rather than implementation details. Agents iteratively:
- diagnose model failures
- design and revise training-data strategies
- use checkpoint feedback
- work toward improving a fixed target model
The paper reports evaluations of four frontier agents across six benchmarks covering software engineering, terminal use, scientific question answering, and mathematics. The authors say agents already show core data-centric research abilities, but still fall far short of reliable recursive self-improvement. The project is open source and the authors invite model labs to test their models.
