AI coding agents may be killing the developer flow state

The post argues that AI coding agents have moved developers out of the old “flow state” loop. Instead of switching between planning and autopilot while coding, people now stay in System 2 mode: they either wait for an agent to finish or launch another agent for a second task.

The author says industry pressure to spend more on tokens and chase “100x productivity” is pushing many developers toward option 2, which increases mental fatigue and burnout. Option 1 is more pleasant, but less aligned with the current AI productivity race.
