Google DeepMind shifts much of its AlphaFold team toward Gemini and other bets

Financial Times reporting says Google DeepMind has been reshuffling the team behind AlphaFold as it pushes Gemini closer to OpenAI and Anthropic.
- Most of the researchers credited on the original AlphaFold papers have been reassigned over the past year.
- Their work has spread across Gemini, enzyme design, genomics, and nuclear fusion, with some moving to Alphabet’s drug-discovery unit Isomorphic Labs.
- AlphaFold co-creator John Jumper, who shared the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, left DeepMind in June to join Anthropic after nearly nine years.
Google is reportedly not abandoning AlphaFold entirely, but the original team is now much more diffuse, making major new iterations less likely.
