Deep Dive: Why AI-Assisted Bioweapons Won't Kill You

Addressing concerns about open weight models enabling bioweapons, the author interviewed dozens of biosecurity experts. Experts suggest that while AI reduces computational bottlenecks, manufacturing bioweapons still faces extremely high practical barriers. Fatal bioterror attacks have been exceedingly rare since the 1980s because they require significant resources, professional teams, and specialized institutional access. Furthermore, pathogens are indiscriminate, making them inefficient weapons. Thus, entirely eliminating AI design barriers wouldn't significantly increase the absolute risk of bioweapon attacks.
