Australia’s states reject renewable-power rules for AI datacentres as bills may surge

Australia’s Queensland and Northern Territory have rejected the federal government’s push to require AI datacentres to run on renewable power.

The Guardian report says Labor still plans to move ahead with national rules on datacentres’ energy and water use, while S&P warns datacentre power demand could rise fivefold by 2035 to 10% of Australia’s electricity consumption, potentially pushing bills sharply higher.
