1,100+ frontier AI employees urge U.S. support for slowing automated AI progress
dgrobinson · x · 2026-07-29
More than 1,100 employees from frontier AI companies signed a statement urging the U.S. government to support an international effort to build the technical and governance tools needed to deliberately slow the frontier of automated AI development.
- The statement argues that AI could greatly accelerate progress, but the world may not yet have the ability to understand or control the resulting systems.
- It says industry, governments, and society may need the option to buy time to address risks and strengthen oversight.
- Signatories include John Schulman and Shengjia Zhao, who both argue that coordinated mechanisms may be needed as automated AI research speeds up.
