Robotics Won't Have a Single ChatGPT Moment, Says Veteran VC

Countering the hype that one great AI model can run any robot, veteran VC Seth Winterroth pours cold water on the idea based on the status of companies like Wayve and Skild AI. He argues that robotics won't have a single "ChatGPT moment" for four reasons:
- The stack has to work first: Integration and calibration of sensors, compute, and control systems are prerequisites. Wayve's early tests literally involved duct-taping a laptop to a car roof.
- Co-design of model and machine: There is no universal "brain" because the compute, power, and cost constraints differ wildly. An automotive chip drawing >100 watts is entirely unsuitable for a warehouse robot.
- Massive multidisciplinary engineering: Outside the mature automotive ecosystem, general robotics companies (like Skild AI) must build almost everything in-house, from hands to system hardware and validation.
- No internet for the physical world: Models cannot scrape physical data like LLMs scrape text. Physical data must be earned slowly by deploying real products, observing, and correcting errors.
He concludes that while deep learning is transforming robotics, true breakthroughs will belong to teams willing to build the full stack and earn their data through a hundred smaller victories.
