A public statement titled “Pacing the Frontier” is being circulated by 1,132 employees of frontier AI companies.
The statement argues that AI could create a dramatically better future, but that outcome is not guaranteed. It warns that leading AI companies may be close to automating AI research, which could accelerate capability progress faster than our ability to understand or control the resulting systems.
It says the industry, governments, and society may need the ability to “buy time” by developing stronger oversight, security measures, and governance tools. The document specifically requests that the U.S. government support an international effort to build the technical and governance infrastructure needed to deliberately pace frontier automated AI development.
