1,132 frontier AI workers back a call to slow automated AI progress
AdrienLE · x · 2026-07-29
A new statement titled Pacing the Frontier says 1,132 employees at frontier AI companies support creating technical and governance tools that could deliberately slow or pace automated AI development.
The statement argues that AI could bring huge benefits, but that frontier labs may be close to automating AI research, which could accelerate capability growth faster than society can understand or control it. It says industry, government, and society may need the option to buy time to develop security measures and oversight, and asks the U.S. government to support an international effort to build those pacing mechanisms.
The post also highlights endorsements and comments from figures such as John Schulman and Shengjia Zhao, who argue that coordination may be necessary as frontier capabilities advance.
