OpenAI and 1,122 Frontier Employees Urge US Government to Help Pace AI Development

OpenAI officially stated that as AI acceleration increases, the world may eventually need to pace the rate of AI advancement. The company hopes to collaborate with the U.S. government, other labs, and the open-source community to develop necessary technical and governance tools.
The post highlights a joint statement signed by 1,122 employees from frontier AI companies. The statement warns that while AI could create a better future, labs are close to automating AI research, which could cause capabilities to accelerate beyond human control.
It highlights that under intense competitive pressure, industry and society need the option to "buy time" to address emerging risks. Consequently, the signatories request the U.S. government to support an international effort to develop tools capable of deliberately pacing the frontier of automated AI development.
Notable researchers, including John Schulman, endorsed the statement, emphasizing the need for coordination mechanisms as AI progress accelerates.
