This is the first installment of a deep technical blog series documenting a four-month experiment: teaching neural networks to render natural images using Gabor wavelets.
Amidst the hype around hyperrealistic image/video generation models, the author takes a different approach by exploring smaller, unique, and self-trained models. Using the Gabor representation as an entry point and assisted by Claude, the author explores machine learning to discover creative tooling and achieve a more expressive approach to image generation.
