1,122 Frontier AI Employees Petition Government to Build Mechanisms for Pacing AI Progress
TFenrir · reddit · 2026-07-29
A Reddit user shared the full text of a letter signed by 1,122 employees from frontier AI companies. The letter states that while AI could create a better future, leading companies are now close to automating AI research, which could cause capability development to accelerate beyond human understanding and control.
The signatories argue that to address emerging risks and strengthen oversight, industry and government need the option to "buy time." However, intense competitive pressure prevents any single company or country from unilaterally slowing down.
Therefore, they formally request the US government to support an international effort to develop the technical and governance tools needed to deliberately pace the frontier of automated AI development.
