1,122 frontier AI employees urge the U.S. to build tools to slow AI progress

A new open letter signed by 1,122 employees from frontier AI companies asks the U.S. government to back an international effort to build the technical and governance tools needed to deliberately pace frontier AI development.
The letter argues that leading labs may be approaching the point where AI can automate AI research itself, which could speed progress beyond society’s ability to understand or control it. It calls for:
- technical and governance mechanisms to slow frontier-wide acceleration when needed
- more time to develop security measures and oversight
- coordination across companies and countries, since no single actor wants to slow down unilaterally
Notable signatories cited in the post include chief scientists from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Meta, plus OpenAI’s chief research officer and Google DeepMind’s VP for AI safety.
