Anthropic ships MCP’s biggest update yet, making the protocol stateless

Anthropic says the latest MCP release is now live and is the biggest update to the protocol since launch.
The spec moves MCP to a stateless core, which makes remote servers easier to deploy and scale, especially on serverless and edge infrastructure. It also adds standardized extensions for interactive UIs and long-running tasks, and hardens authorization to align with production OAuth 2.0 and OIDC deployments such as Entra and Okta. Anthropic says MCP has passed 400 million monthly SDK downloads.
