Ai2 Launches OlmoEarth Platform for Planetary-Scale Geospatial Inference

Ai2 (Allen Institute for AI) has launched the OlmoEarth Platform, an infrastructure designed to provide organizations without robust engineering teams with end-to-end geospatial capabilities, from fine-tuning to large-scale inference.
- Background: OlmoEarth is a family of Earth observation foundation models trained on roughly 10TB of multimodal satellite data. It is already being used for deforestation monitoring, food security, and wildfire risk assessment.
- Inference Power: The platform can handle continent-scale inference. In a recent run to map wildfire risk across North America, it utilized 19,600 CPUs and 994 GPUs in parallel, reducing an estimated 4,737 hours of serial compute to just 30.5 hours of wall-clock time (a 155x speedup).
- Roadmap: Future updates include change-detection alerts, agentic tools for non-experts, and precomputed global embeddings that could eventually skip the forward pass entirely.
