Study finds Amazon flooded with AI-written books that are crowding out non-AI fiction
A new paper on AI and copyright uses full-text AI detection from Pangram to study self-published genre fiction sold on Amazon from 2023 through March 2026. The authors argue that Amazon has become flooded with books containing substantial AI-generated text.
Their main claim is not just that these books exist, but that they are also earning meaningful money and crowding out sales of non-AI books. The paper’s broader point is that AI-generated books do not need to be high quality to affect the market at scale — they only need to exist in large enough numbers, something generative AI now makes easy.
