Gartner’s 2026–2027 AI threat map highlights prompt injection, AI app compromise, and agent hijacking
Gartner’s new threatscape says AI is simultaneously expanding the attack surface and improving defensive capabilities, forcing security teams to rethink how they secure AI systems.
The chart calls out several AI-specific risks as critical or emerging threats, including:
- Prompt injection
- AI application compromise
- AI-augmented attacks
- Agentic automation hijack
- AI infrastructure risk
It also includes a second matrix for AI agent discovery and preliminary risk assessment, where risk rises with both autonomy and data sensitivity. Embedded agents are framed as lower risk, while multi-agent systems handling sensitive data are in the highest-risk zone.
