Claude Opus 5 loses to Fable 5 in real coding tasks, tool tests, and cost
erebueius · reddit · 2026-07-28
A user says Claude Opus 5 performs poorly across a large, real coding project: it misreads code even as a subagent, makes destructive edits it later forgets, and appears overconfident and amnesic in practice.
They compare it with Claude Fable 5 on a complex build and on 23 tool-calling tests:
- Complex 3D city project: Fable 5 finished faster and produced a much better result, despite similar or lower total cost.
- Incident/rain extension task: Fable 5 again used fewer runtime tokens and fewer tool calls; Opus 5 was somewhat cheaper per token but not per completed task.
- Tool-calling benchmark: Fable 5 scored 21/23 vs Opus 5’s 20/23.
The post argues that token price alone is a misleading value metric, because Fable 5 delivered better outcomes for only a small cost difference.
