Anders Sandberg says the loss of control may arrive earlier than people think. In the singularity-style model discussed in Superintelligence, once the AI trajectory visibly bends away from exponential growth, there may only be about one doubling time left before steering becomes impossible.
He argues that human decision-making runs on a fixed timescale that is often slower than that final window, so waiting for the curve to obviously change may already be too late.
