New paper finds AI-written books are already crowding out non-AI fiction on Amazon

A paper on AI-generated books argues that “slop” still matters when there are enough of them.

Using full-text AI detection from Pangram, the authors studied self-published genre fiction sold on Amazon from 2023 through March 2026. Their findings suggest Amazon is flooded with books containing substantial AI-generated text, and that these books are not only earning meaningful revenue but also crowding out sales of non-AI books.

The key claim is that a book does not need to be high quality to shift a market; it only needs to exist at scale, which generative AI makes possible.
