Poolside’s open-weight Laguna S/XS 2.1 is being positioned as a major local-AI model update: the poster says the roughly 100B model beats much larger systems and can run locally on a 128GB MacBook.

A separate effort, MLX.fast, is launching as a public competition to improve Laguna XS 2.1’s MLX inference engine on consumer Macs. The cited early result is about a 35% speedup, with the expectation that more optimizations could push throughput above 2x the baseline.
