Copyright debate over AI training turns into a fight over value creation

The author argues that describing unlicensed training on protected works as a simple “transfer of value” is misleading. In his view, model training creates value at significant cost and the real debate is how copyright and IP should settle into a new equilibrium that still incentivizes data creation and curation. He also pushes back on framing existential risk as a reason to ignore current harms, and says AI developers will likely end up on the other side of this debate.
