Nature reports that researchers have repurposed a peculiar CRISPR enzyme into a programmable cancer-killing switch. The enzyme is designed to recognize a specific messenger RNA — such as one produced by a cancer cell — and then shred the cell’s genome, causing the cell to self-destruct.
The early results, described in two papers, suggest a possible route to attack tumors driven by “undruggable” mutant proteins that have resisted conventional medicines.
