AI spending fears trigger a chip-stock selloff

The Guardian reports that renewed worries over AI infrastructure spending pushed South Korean chip stocks sharply lower. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix both fell by more than 10%, dragging the Kospi to a three-month low.

The article says investors are increasingly worried about the borrowing behind AI datacentre buildouts, while a separate report about China’s homegrown chip-making equipment added to the pressure. Morningstar described the reaction as a knee-jerk selloff that may have been overdone.
