Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published a blog post saying the company has never advocated a ban on open-weights models, after criticism that it wanted too much control over AI’s future.

The CNBC piece says the clarification came after a coalition including Nvidia, Microsoft, Meta and Palantir urged policymakers to avoid “premature restrictions” on open-weight models. OpenAI later signed the letter, while Anthropic did not. The article also notes that Chinese startups currently dominate the open-weight market and that U.S. officials are considering whether restrictions are warranted.
