The Emporia City Council in Kansas recently reviewed a massive 1,000-acre data center project facing strong opposition from local residents. During a nearly 5-hour meeting, a high school physics teacher was arrested and charged with interference after clapping in the audience, following orders from a city commissioner to remove anyone making noise.
Despite the controversy and community protests, the council voted 5-0 to approve the data center zoning measure. The incident highlights the growing social friction and local resistance accompanying the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure.
