Anthropic’s July 17 billing incident hit Claude Code users with paid credit charges
A Claude Code user filed an issue describing a July 17, 2026 billing failure in which included plan allowance was bypassed and paid usage credits were charged instead. The user reconstructed seven invoices totaling $704.71 for that day, including:
- $604.71 in six automatic extra-usage recharges
- a separate $100.00 usage-credit purchase
What Anthropic acknowledged
The report cites Anthropic’s status page, which says the company had an erroneous requirement for usage credits across Claude.ai, Claude Code, and other surfaces. Anthropic later said the model became available again without usage credits, as expected.
The company also emailed the user that it had identified incorrect billing in a narrower 18:16–18:47 UTC window and issued a $3.11 account credit.
Dispute scope
The user says the minimum evidence-backed refund demand covers all invoices dated July 17. Charges on adjacent days are under investigation, but the user does not include them in the current $704.71 claim without transaction-level proof tying them to the same bug.
