White House Weighs Crackdown on Chinese AI Distillation

As Chinese AI models rapidly rise, the US government is internally divided on its response. The White House is pushing for stricter controls on Chinese models that may soon rival US frontiers, while the Commerce Department views these restrictions as unworkable.
Officials are currently discussing measures to prevent Chinese labs from training their models on US models via "distillation." This follows Anthropic's allegations that Alibaba launched the largest known distillation attack, and claims that Moonshot developed Kimi K3 by distilling Anthropic's models. The Treasury Secretary has hinted that such actions could lead to sanctions. Meanwhile, powerful Chinese open-weight models like GLM, Kimi, and Qwen are expanding rapidly, contrasting with the increasingly locked-down approach of US labs.
