Google AI Search Surges to 43% of Queries, Becoming the Destination Itself

Data from market intelligence firm Similarweb reveals that Google's AI Overviews now appear in 43% of searches, up from just 15% a year ago.
This rapid adoption indicates that AI-generated answers are quickly becoming the default search experience. During the same period, visits to Google's more conversational AI Mode surged from 126 million in June 2025 to 279 million by May 2026. This shift illustrates how Google is transitioning from a navigation tool of blue links into a final destination where users consume information directly.
