OpenAI says small teams use AI as a cross-functional generalist tool

OpenAI · x · 2026-07-28

OpenAI says it studied how AI is becoming a general-purpose tool for small businesses, where the person closest to a problem often ends up solving it even when it falls outside their job description.

The attached chart from OpenAI Economic Research shows that smaller workspaces have more boundary-crossing among typical-volume users: outside-occupation message share is highest in the smallest spaces and trends lower as workspace size increases. The figure is based on a random sample of U.S. ChatGPT users linked to self-reported occupations and ONET task descriptions.
