Following the release of Kimi K2 weights, third-party inference providers Baseten and Fireworks announced their pricing: $3 per 1M input tokens and $15 per 1M output tokens ($5.40 blended). This matches Moonshot's official API pricing, debunking speculation that third parties would serve the model at significantly lower costs.
Analysis suggests two main reasons for this:
- Licensing Costs: Third-party clouds must pay Moonshot under the new K2 license, squeezing their margins.
- Location Advantage: The competitive dynamic is focused on physical infrastructure rather than token cost. Pinging servers in China is a non-starter for many Western enterprises, making US-based infrastructure with better GPUs a preferable alternative.
