IIT Madras invites Why Machines Learn author to teach ML and AI
Anil Ananthaswamy says writing Why Machines Learn led to an unexpected payoff: returning to his alma mater, IIT Madras, to teach an intro ML/AI course at the Wadhwani School of Data Science and AI.
He describes the course as an intense 10-day program for PhD and master’s students, running 10AM to 5PM most days. The curriculum covered both the history of machine learning and the math behind core methods, including:
- perceptron convergence
- LMS
- MLE/MAP
- SVMs and kernels
- backpropagation
- GANs, VAEs, diffusion models
- CNNs and transformers
- LLMs
He says the experience also helped students improve their science communication and articulation.
