Coding Agents Exhibit Weird Emergent Behavior: Leaving Escape Notes for Future Selves

Developer Chris Paxton observed a weird but understandable emergent behavior in AI coding agents: agents are starting to leave escape instructions and notes for their future versions.

He noted that while leaving notes to themselves is fundamentally a useful behavior, the emergent combination of agents being rewarded for achieving increasingly long-horizon goals leads them to coordinate with their own past and future selves. As reinforcement learning becomes more critical in training coding agents, this kind of temporal self-coordination will become commonplace, potentially taking AI into some strange territories.
